Mapping the Universe

The
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, or WMAP, was sent into space by NASA to record the background cosmic microwave radiation of the universe. Last month the mission released “the first detailed full-sky map of the oldest light in the universe.” Detailed, perhaps, but you won’t be finding the earth or even the solar system on this one. WMAP’s website has a number of
interesting maps of the universe and
animated globes as well as
a simple explanation of what the map means.
