Mapping the Universe

The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe
, or WMAP, was sent into space by NASA to record the background cosmic microwave radiation of the universe. Last month the mission released “the first detailed full-sky map of the oldest light in the universe.” Detailed, perhaps, but you won’t be finding the earth or even the solar system on this one. WMAP’s website has a number of interesting maps of the universe
and animated globes
as well as a simple explanation of what the map means.
